Our eco friendly wood-burning barrel sauna has arrived at the chalet

We are over the moon to announce the arrival of our Barrel Sauna:

This is a very eco-friendly way to sauna…it’s made from cedarwood from sustainable forests and is the most wonderfully natural way to relax – listening to the faint crackle of the fire as you unwind. And to top it all, it is a really beautiful shape!

We’re sure everyone is going to love it as much as we do.

Green Electricity at the chalet

We’re very happy to be able, now, to switch to a green electricity provider, and have chosen GEG of Grenoble to supply power to the chalet. Commended by Greenpeace for their investments into small hydroelectric stations and solar power, and their ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency at their large corporate clients, they are aiming to hugely increase their solar capacity over the next few years. Their EcoAlp tariff supplies clean electricity to the grid equal to our consumption.

Carbon Neutral is a phrase that gets used a lot – I’m not sure that we can every be truly carbon neutral, but certainly this helps!

It’s slightly ironic that Chamonix is an important source of green electricity for EDF, with its power plant at Montenvers, and the water that powers this plant emerges in the dramatic torrent about 400m from the chalet! However, EDF don’t offer a green tariff of any kind.

The Hot Tub has landed!

We’re very proud to announce that we now have our hot tub installed in the perfect spot. You can take in the views of Mont Blanc, the Aiguille du Midi and the Dru whilst luxuriating with the relaxing hydromassage – it’s a great place to appreciate the unbelievable Alpine sunset.

We got the hot tub from Chamonix Hot tub and Spa who were very helpful – highly recommended! They will also be handling all the maintenance so that the water is sparkling clean for all our guests.

Chamonix in September – latest from the chalet

A weekend of gardening – it was like the Chamonix Strimmer Massacre! We want to keep the garden natural, and are going to leave most of it as a meadow of Alpine flowers, but the best way to do this, we’re told, is to cut it back twice a year.

The plan is to have the area immediately surrounding the chalet as short grass – nice to sit on in the summer – and then let all the rest be meadow, with some paths mowed through it so that it’s easy to reach the tracks beside the river – these are a beautiful walk that we love to take in the evening, but dew on the knee-high grass can get you a bit damp – hence the paths.

Eventually we want to crane some boulders in and make a huge granite table from them, but this may take some time…

Also this time – hanging the first of the beautiful red linen thermal backed curtains that Nick’s mother has made for us..they look really wonderful, we can’t wait to put the rest of them up. They make the chalet’s bedrooms most luxurious.

Chamonix itself is getting really smart now as work continues with the pedestrianisation of the town centre. The new flagstone pavements look great and the pace of the work is amazing – it seems like a whole street was completed over the last few days. It’s good to see it – Chamonix has such lovely squares and granite buildings and this makes a real difference to the look of the town.
